Tom Miller has been a financial representative with The Waltos Group since 1995.
He is a graduate of California State University, Long Beach with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Education. Tom began his career with The Waltos Group as an intern while in college. He was attracted to the career because he wanted to have the ability to be in control and to be able to dictate his own level of success.
Tom offers his insights on the career:
"It takes a willingness to be in a career and not just a job. You have to have the patience to allow yourself and your clients to mature. You must also want to have direct impact on individuals and businesses. Lastly, you must have an entrepreneurial spirit to take chances in growing a business and building something bigger than yourself."
"The greatest reward is getting to work with my clients. When I am meeting with a prospect or a client it is a wonderful feeling to be able to ask them about all the things that are important to them, their goals, dreams, fears, etc. Being able to help when they don’t know how to do it for themselves is very rewarding."
"My biggest challenge was lack of experience. Not only in the business but lack of experience with running a business. Not treating it like it was my own business and being more focused on developing. In retrospect those were challenging years knowing if I was going to make it in this business. Now the challenges are totally different but much more numerous."
Tom offers some advice for those considering the career:
"It is definitely not a short term proposition. If you are interested in starting the career you have to be committed to giving yourself the time to develop before you decide it isn’t the right fit."
"What distinguishes Northwestern Mutual Financial Network is knowing that you will never have to say you're sorry to a client for the products that Northwestern Mutual provides. There is certainly enough to be concerned about in life and having our company in our back pocket is a huge sense of relief and confidence when I sit down with a prospect or client."
"This career has been many things to me, rewarding, challenging, humbling, exciting but most importantly relevant. I enjoy the fact that what I do everyday is relevant in so many ways. Helping people plan for their future as a financial advisor makes me relevant on a daily basis to the people I work with. I enjoy knowing that and if it is something you want to feel than this is certainly a career worth investigating."
Tom spends most of his free time with my family. Tom and his wife, Kathy have been married for six years. They have two daughters, Summer who will be four in June and Sienna who will be two in June. They like to work out a lot so finding that free time during the week is always a challenge but something they do to have balance in their lives.
As the girls get older, Kathy and Tom will most certainly be active in their daughters' lives. They both enjoy working with athletics and feel that it is a great way for kids to learn about challenging themselves and that it's not always going to be easy. They also feel that athletics has been one of the key things giving them confidence that they know if they want something in life they have the ability to accomplish it.
